Simulator and controls familiarisation
A first, aircraft-neutral practice session: get a calm session ready, find which control input moves the aircraft around each axis, and look around the cockpit before you try to fly. It teaches the setup and the controls only and contains no aircraft procedures.
Simulator and controls familiarisation
A first, aircraft-neutral practice session: get a calm session ready, find which control input moves the aircraft around each axis, and look around the cockpit before you try to fly. It teaches the setup and the controls only and contains no aircraft procedures.
What you will practise
- Prepare a safe, stationary simulator session ready for practice.
- Identify which control input moves the aircraft around each of its three axes.
- Find the view and pause controls, look around the cockpit, and pause and resume the session.
Before you start
- Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 is installed and launches normally.
- Any installed aircraft may be used; this exercise is not specific to one aircraft.
- A game controller, joystick or keyboard and mouse is available.
- A safe, stationary situation on the ground is enough for this exercise; any weather or starting-position choices your simulator offers are a bonus, not a requirement.
- No prior simulator experience is assumed.
- The 20-minute estimate covers the exercise tasks only; allow extra time while you work through the setup checklist.
- Menus, view controls and pause options differ between simulator versions and devices; this exercise asks you to discover what your own installation offers.
New to setting up? Simulator session setup walks you through getting the session ready.
